The deadliest shooting in modern American history took place on Sunday night, when 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock killed at least 58 people and injured hundreds more at a country music festival on the Las Vegas strip. The Islamic State militant group quickly took responsibility for the mass killing on Monday through its Amaq news agency. If the militant group’s statements turn out to be groundless, however, that would be unusual. In Paddock’s case, there is little immediate evidence to indicate that he had ties with ISIS or supported its ideology. He is also a good deal older than the average age of Americans charged with offenses related to ISIS, which is 28.
