It is a peculiar quirk of the video game industry, caught somewhere between the worlds of tech and entertainment and wholly its own thing. That means that we're about to formally launch the hype train for next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony, and that means we're going to begin the long process of phasing out the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. There's really no way around it: A PlayStation 4 or Xbox One might have still been a great Christmas gift in 2018, but it's just a bit weirder in 2019. New consoles pose question marks for the industry, and people are inclined to wait for answers before making large purchases. In a weird way, I could even imagine PlayStation 4 sales recovering after the PlayStation 5 comes out and people realize they can still get good use of the old machine, which is likely to see a price-cut.
