Ethiopia’s federal government and leaders in the war-torn Tigray region signed a peace accord Nov. 2 but it’s only a partial peace for Africa’s second most-populous nation as war continues to rage on the other side of the country. A mosaic of more than 80 ethnolinguistic communities, Ethiopia has struggled to manage rival claims to territorial and political power. Compared to the Tigray war, the conflict in the vast Oromia region has drawn scant international attention. Why sign a peace accord with some rebels while ignoring the other group that has far more fighting potential? If the purpose of giving peace a chance is to benefit the country and its people, then a comprehensive, all-inclusive peace strategy needs to be implemented without any further loss of life and destruction in Ethiopia.
