China has a bad reputation when it comes to the environment, but things are starting to change. That is great news for the planet. It is bad news, though, for suppliers of plastics and other goods that end up as waste in its landfills or haze in its skies. The most recent evidence: China announced in late January that it will ban nonbiodegradable plastic bags in most stores and for takeout food in major cities by the end of 2020.
