The car was parked on Connecticut Avenue NW about 3 p.m. Friday, and the thief got in through the rear vent window to take a backpack with a laptop, the police said. It was one of at least 31 thefts from cars in the District that day. As of this time last year, D.C. police had recorded 11,553 thefts from cars in the city. Thefts from cars have been described as among the most difficult to stop. Although the total has declined this year, Friday’s figure is three more than this year’s daily average of 28 thefts.
