The world takes notice

The World Bank and the European Union have, at last, stepped up and taken measures to try and compel Myanmar to stop its clearance operations in the Rakhine state. But by halting its $200 million development loan to Myanmar, the World Bank is finally playing an active role in bringing an end to the crisis, and thus living up to its own values of non-discrimination and social inclusion. The EU also announced that it is suspending invitations to Myanmar’s military leaders and reviewing all practical military cooperation with the country. Nevertheless, we commend the World Bank and the EU for taking the lead and, hopefully, showing others the way. This is how the global community should work in times of crisis, especially when the crisis is an attack on the universal principles of human rights.
