▶ Michele Henry visits the NExT Lab at Ryerson University to see how bathroom scales compare to the gold standard Bod Pod. The Bod Pod is a $90,000 machine used mainly by researchers and scientists. The Beurer BF520 Glass Body Analysis Scale ($49.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond), for instance, uses bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) to determine body fat, says spokesperson Britta Dittrich. It measures a variety of metrics, including body water, body mass index and body fat. One participant, a thin male standing 5-foot-6 and 120 pounds, was 16.4 per cent body fat according to the Bod Pod.
