VANCOUVER—Ten centimetres of snow was a nightmare for Vancouver commuters Monday morning — and SkyTrain riders can expect an equally painful ride home. ( DARRYL DYCK / THE CANADIAN PRESS )The main reason for the delay is that the SkyTrain system, one of the longest fully automated tracks in the world, detects intruders using sensors. The snow and ice was so heavy on Monday that the sensors thought there were intruders all over the line. “There is an automated system that lets you know when the bus is coming; why can’t they use a similar thing when it’s cancelled?” Timm said. British Columbians haven’t seen the back of “Winter Storm Maya” — as the Weather Channel dubbed the rare dumping of snow.
