The 50th ASEAN Summit just concluded in Manila, generated renewed momentum to the organisation’s commitment to ensuring development, cooperation, peace, and stability in the region. The summit also assessed the impact of policy shifts in the US and Europe and probable adjustments within the ASEAN region to protect its own interests. The summit agreed to call for peace and security in the South China Sea area and called for reconciliation and negotiations to ease tensions. The summit also reiterated a stand against militarisation and further land reclamation in the South China Sea. Some issues bearing utmost relevance not covered in this summit could be raised in the next summit.
