Removal of the DRAP from the Greenbelt and repeal of the legislation breaks that promise as well. The Greenbelt was created to “permanently” protect the agricultural lands, natural areas, and water resources of the Golden Horseshoe. Ignoring Parks Canada’s letter that Ontario did not meet the bilateral Rouge Park Agreement to consult Canada regarding any changes to the Greenbelt Plan, the Ford government simply proceeded to remove the DRAP from the Greenbelt and repeal the DRAP Protection Act. Parks Canada also advised there is a probable risk of irreversible harm to the park, thereby compromising the massive investments made by Canadians, Ontarians and municipalities in establishing the Rouge Park. The protection of the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve in perpetuity was bought and paid for by all Ontarians.
