Legendary Entertainment has reached an agreement with the estate of Frank Herbert for the television and film adaptation rights to Herbert’s "Dune," the iconic sci-fi book released in 1965. Herbert’s tale centers around Paul Atreides and the politics of controlling the desert planet Arrakis and its resources. Adapted into a 1984 film by David Lynch -- as well as a 2014 documentary about cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky's failed attempt to bring it to the screen in the '70s ("Jodorowsky's Dune") -- "Dune" has been an obvious influence on "Star Wars" and "The Matrix." The projects, whatever they might eventually be, would be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.
