Most Kiwis have heard of the word, true, but that's because so many towns have a pub by that name. Far more words than I used to see, in truth, but somehow they stress me out a lot less. I was reminded this week of just how distasteful that sort of attitude can look by the snob in chief of new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's first Cabinet. The snob factor really kicks in when he instructs staff that all "non-titled males" must be referred to as Esquire. I suspect, somehow, that Rees-Mogg associates the use of correct grammatical style with the concept of civilisation.
