Nowhere is it higher than in sub-Saharan Africa, home to two-thirds of the world’s population living with HIV. Younger women in the region are twice as likely to be living with HIV as their male peers. This is unacceptable, and the reason for it is simple: HIV and AIDS are fuelled by a patriarchal system that devalues women. In Malawi, where one-third of young women have experienced a physical assault, HIV education challenges patriarchal gender norms and reduces sexual violence. She runs a business, is a volunteer community health worker and leads support groups for people living with HIV.
