The race debate - will it rise again? David White Former National Party and ACT Party leader Don Brash, who is now fronting a new "anti-separatism" group. Back when he was National leader Brash spearheaded the Iwi/Kiwi backlash against so-called "race based" laws and sparked a debate that bitterly divided New Zealand, and very nearly carried National into power. It's called wedge politics and proved so successful Brash tried to reheat the leftovers as ACT leader, but failed dismally. But for the race debate to get traction again it needs a lightning rod, like the foreshore and seabed row.
