Three men who lost their hands are back at their jobs following successful hand transplant surgeries recently in Kochi. "Research today is focused on non-vital organ retrieval and transplant as well as creating artificial organs. The ethical issue besieging non-vital organ transplants is if one can live without these organs, should doctors be doing this just because the technology and expertise are available. Pune-based transplant surgeon Vrishali Patil said, "In developed countries, the differentiation between vital and non-vital organ transplant does not exist. "Pancreas is a vital organ-just not emergent as liver," she said. But the laws, policies and guidelines supervising non-vital organ transplants are in the developmental stages in India.
