The number of job openings now equals the number of people looking for jobs

(Jeff Morehead /Chronicle-Tribune/AP)Every month, the government tallies the number of people looking for jobs and the number of job openings that are available. It has always been the case that the number of people looking for work has exceeded the number of available positions — until March. The first is that the government has been collecting the data on job openings only since 2001, so the gap between job-seekers and job openings only extends back that far. A critical consideration here is that just because there’s one job for every job-seeker doesn’t mean there’s a job you would want. Only nondurable-goods manufacturing had a lower rate of job openings in the private sector.
