A night clerk at a Calgary convenience store fended off two cigarette thieves, grappling with them, barricading them inside the store and pelting them with bottles of windshield wiper fluid. One, carrying an ice-climbing axe, cornered Ahmed behind the counter while the other set to work emptying the cigarette cabinet into a duffel bag. He grabbed a small stool and used it to keep distance between himself and the masked man in construction coveralls. After several apparent attempts at finding another way out, one of them smashed an axe through the glass doors. Across the street, someone called police to report a strange man throwing things at the convenience store.
