The choice of Mr. Panneerselvam was to ensure continuity — he had performed the role of a chair warmer with aplomb before. Why did the former CM subsequently change tack and take recourse to rebellion? It is quite clear that both the Governor — acting as a representative of the Centre — and Mr. Panneerselvam had doubts about Sasikala’s exoneration in the case. Clearly, an impression was created that Mr. Panneerselvam was being led on by the Centre, keen on a rupture in the AIADMK. Mr. Panneerselvam now has no option but to build a mass base using his rebellion.
