Out slipped a few dodder seeds that had contaminated their shipment, each one smaller than a poppy seed. Sometimes the panic over invasive species reveals deep-seated tropes of racist and nativist thinking about human migrants. At other times, invasive species reflect an overblown fear of the wild outdoors, as in the famously poisonous giant hogweed. Almost always, fear of invasive species reveals socioeconomic class dynamics, especially as they are expressed in real estate.
