Much of it has to do with the lies we tell ourselves about the electoral process just completed. Troublingly, the equality of votes is not the only comforting fib we tell ourselves about elections and voting. In Canada, if you don’t know by now that Andrew Scheer is as sinister as Stephen Harper, a blander Doug Ford and a closet American, or if you don’t know that Justin Trudeau isn’t who he says he is, well, you haven’t been paying attention. Polling suggests that almost half of Canadians believe a majority government has won the support of a majority of voters. If you don’t vote you forfeit the right to complain.
