Making the toys that give Kiwi children so much enjoyment creates millions of "left-behind" children in China, according to workers advocacy organisation China Labour Watch. GETTY IMAGES There has been an international outcry in recent years about China's 'left behind' children, whose parents lived and worked away from their children in urban factories, as grandparents raised their children. China Labour Watch accused Western toy makers of contracting Chinese toy factories to make toys so cheaply, suppressing wages meaning the nongmingong cannot afford to bring their children with them to set up home near the factories they work in. "Given the nature of the work in the toy industry, children of migrant workers are inevitably impacted. "In 2020 we plan to grow the programme further to cover 50 toy factories in China," Robertson said.
