But as we enter yet another wave, the absence of permanent and adequate paid sick days undermines the government’s pandemic response and recovery plan. Previous waves have demonstrated that the lack of paid sick days is a significant barrier for the community to follow public health guidelines. Workers without paid sick days have had no choice but to go to work sick. The government extended their temporary and inadequate three paid sick days program until July, but only after voting against permanent paid sick days for the 27th time just a few weeks ago. It’s time for the government to learn the science of paid sick leave, listen to health providers, and respond to the vast majority of the population demanding paid sick days.
