AdvertisementA fascinating collection of aerial photographs dubbed ‘Historical Google Earth’ dating back to WWII reveals how the country transitioned from a bomb-ravaged wasteland to a built-up modern Britain. The university borrowed RAF planes and pilots to take photographs until 1965 when it bought its own Cessna Skymaster. It is one of 1,500 images that have been released by the University of CambridgeStokesay Castle, Salop pictured on 18/07/1948. The Department of Geography and Cambridge University Library are exploring potential plans to digitise the remaining hundreds of thousands of photographs and negatives in the aerial photography archive. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills7/8/1947 of Corfe Castle, Dorset.
