The government is trying —again—to bring its paper-based retirement system into the 21st century.

But the effort to automate the retirement systems of millions of people who worked for the government is still… years away, with no start or completion date. The saving grace of the retirement processing system in Boyers, Pa., may be that no one wants to hack it. The system would manage the files of current and former federal employees, which right now are handled by hand, with paper files, in the belly of an underground mine in Pennsylvania. After five costly attempts, the most paper-bound system in the federal government looks like it will be getting another shot at entering the modern age. The Office of Personnel Management said this week that it has secured funding to begin the process of hiring a contractor to create a new electronic case-management system.
