The old global economy was addicted to Saudi Arabian oil. The new global economy is addicted to Saudi wealth. It shouldn't be terribly surprising that a country with vast oil wealth is pouring money into high-growth tech companies in an effort to diversify away from the fossil fuel. Saudi Arabia denies this. At the time, women in Saudi Arabia weren't even allowed to drive.
