A sportsman for all seasons, Gary Hermansson played rugby and cricket, before becoming a sports psychologist and academic. The price, however, was undertaking a two-year diploma in social work in Wellington. There he completed a degree in social work against a background of campus unrest. He fulfilled social work positions in Gisborne, Lower Hutt and Levin, and studied for a master's degree in education (counselling and guidance). With high expectations to win, "all the focus is on winning, but then the fear of losing affects delivery.
