A former Manenberg taxi driver is now a qualified doctor. Although his days as a taxi driver are a thing of the past, Ortel said he won’t be leaving the gang-infested area any time soon. A man living in the gang-infested community of Manenberg, Cape Town, drove a “pimped-up” minibus taxi on weekends seven years ago to pay for part of his medical studies at Stellenbosch University. After graduating from Stellenbosch University, he received his master’s degree in medicine from the University of Cape Town last month. During his studies he drove taxis for four years and today he credits his hard work as a driver for his successes.
