“Jyoti Cinema,” I answered. I was quite sure there wasn’t a taxi, bus or tram driver who didn’t know where Jyoti Cinema was. Jyoti Cinema was built in the mid-1930s. The next time I visited Calcutta, I saw that what used to be ‘our Jyoti Cinema’ had become a gaping shell, vacant, neglected, unused. Jyoti Cinema lies begging to be resurrected, to be given back some pride and dignity.
