(In line with the recent launch of the book titled Dr. Jose P. Laurel: Nation Above Self, A biography by Mauro Gia Samonte, The Manila Times is reprinting its editorial published on March 9, 1968. In Sugamo, Laurel, like all great men in jail, kept meticulously ordered notes. He also wrote a prayer completely in Latin and on the opposite page a translation of it in English. Filipinos now have the historical perspective to make an assessment of Laurel as leader and as a man of many parts. It is the duty of the scholars to take up the challenge, to perform the thankless task of creating a body of literature on one of the Philippines’ greatest men.
