Our relationship to Queen Elizabeth II, at least in recent years, is too complex and multi-faceted to meet that standard. For 72 years, this symbolism is what the Queen gave Canadians — or some Canadians — in her gentle and temperate way. When Elizabeth II came to power in 1952, Canada’s official flag was still the Union Jack. In truth she became our national symbol, long before the leaf, the beaver, et al, thus kicking off the great Canadian tradition of design by default. In the last decade or so it’s worth noting the attitude toward the Queen and Crown has begun to shift, if only slightly.
