This insect is described as New Zealand's giant bush dragonfly. They have a complex design with characteristics that give the dragonfly impressive flying capabilities. This term refers to the way in which the dragonfly larvae feeds. Adult dragonflies which often have quite short lifespans use their exceptional flying skills as they feed on flying insects. While this dragonfly is a large insect by our standards, its worth remembering that fossil dragonflies have been found that have a wingspan of 60cm.
