Netflix movie Roma and British historical romp The Favourite led the Oscar nominations Tuesday in a history-making lineup that left the best-picture race wide open. SURPRISE: RomaRoma earned 10 Oscar nominations, including nods for best foreign language film, best director, best screenplay and best cinematography, making Alfonso Cuaron the only director in history to be nominated by the film academy for both best director and best cinematography in the same year. Tied with The Favourite for 10 nominations, the black-and-white Spanish-language film certainly struck a chord with the academy. The film received a number of nominations in technical categories, but nothing for Gosling or director Damien Chazelle. SURPRISE: Cold WarCold War could earn Paweł Pawlikowski an Oscar as best director.
