Sears Holdings’ stock price peaked in 2007 at $195.18 (US), when it was an empire with more lines of business. Where America went, Sears followed: As consumers migrated into urban and later suburban areas, Sears swooped in and built an empire of department stores. But at a pace of 10 to 20 Sears Grand stores a year, it was too little, too late. Several former Sears executives say that stores have suffered because Lampert did not pour more money into their maintenance or growth. So in addition to being the chief executive and major shareholder of Sears, Lampert is also effectively a major creditor.
