Borland Lodge was formerly the Pig Creek Transmission Line Camp used by the New Zealand Electricity Department in the construction of the transmission line to supply power from Lake Manapouri to the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter. The lodge originally had a resident teacher, Colin Dainty, and only secondary schools were accommodated with programmes specialising in outdoor education and the study of the natural environment. In 2001 the trust became the Borland Lodge Adventure and Education Trust with a broader focus including the encouragement of primary schools and university groups. Several walking tracks start from the lodge and the road built to service the pylons is the access to Mount Burns and Green Lake. Over the years other animals have been killed for their fur in Southland – possum, ferret and rabbit.
