The Yogi effect: New UP chief minister makes a promising start but must check violence and intimidation

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Adityanath Yogi has hit the ground running, by taking nearly 50 decisions in his first week in office. These decisions range from making a 100 day priority plan for visible development changes in the state to cracking down on illegal slaughterhouses to banning the use of pan masala and polythene in government offices. Yogi’s unexpected elevation to chief ministership could reap rich dividends if he can ably handle UP’s colossal administration and keep fringe right-wing elements in check. The clampdown on illegal slaughterhouses is welcome as they function in dense market places under unhygienic conditions. Yogi needs to assure the Rs 50,000 crore meat industry that it will only regulate and not harass legal establishments.
