America has just completed a banner year for private giving. The 10 largest donations in 2019 amounted to $6.2 billion, up 8% from 2018. These went to a wide array of causes, and came from men and women of the right (Jim Walton, Karen Huntsman) and the left (George Soros, Eric Schmidt).
