The Vietnam War Made Career Military Women 'Happier,' Says Study

For survivors, an anti-war movement in the United States soiled hopes of going home as heroes. Results show that 48% of career military women were “very happy” compared to 38% of women in the general population, says the paper called Women at war: The crucible of Vietnam. During the war, women faced fewer casualties than men did, as well, the paper points out, though it does not seek expressly to compare women and men. Women in the Vietnam War often started out at a relatively high to do work such as nursing, says Jeanne Stellman, the study’s senior researcher. “One reason military women may be happier is that they maintain close contact with their peers after retirement,” Stellman says.
