This week, the Pentagon announced its intention to sell $1.5 billion in armaments, tanks, and military advisory support to Saudi Arabia. The closest the United States came to doing so was in May, when President Obama blocked a transfer of cluster bombs. If that sounds like a major deal, consider that the United States sold more than $20 billion worth of military equipment and support to the Saudis last year. All of that and much more from the United States is put to use in the fierce war that the Saudi military is waging against Shiite militias in Yemen. And the indiscriminate shelling of civilians by Saudi planes has not helped them win over the noncombatant population.
