Approximately 550,000 Americans were homeless at the start of this year with one out of every five of them living in New York City or Los Angeles. Among Continuums of Care (local planning bodies coordinating homelessness services) in major U.S. cities, the largest number of homeless people was recorded in New York City. 73,523 people experienced homelessness in the Big Apple in 2016 while 43,853 experienced it in Los Angeles. At state level, California accounts for 28 percent of homeless individuals in the United States. Half of the country’s homeless population is spread across five states: California, New York, Florida, Texas and Washington.
