President Donald Trump is well prepared to understand the forces at work in this new Europe. Confronting the rising populist right, we have the “European establishment,” the globalizers who tend to control and work through international bureaucracies. The European establishment will work with them, seek to cultivate the weak and sympathetic links in the Trump administration, and work to regain control. GEES’ study emphasizes that there is a “Trump tide” throughout Europe and that Trump’s presidency might weaken the more statist elements in the new European right. The political shift to the right in Europe, has a multiplier effect much larger than in the United States.
