There’s no question that Britain needs a serious debate about tax reform. The contest for the Conservative Party leadership could have been an opportunity to start it. These include cutting corporation tax and the interest rate on student loans plus more spending on defence. Meanwhile, Boris Johnson’s plans to raise national insurance and higher-rate income tax thresholds alone could cost up to £32 billion a year. That doesn’t include his proposals to roll out full fibre broadband to the whole country.
