Where steel is concerned, the British taxpayer is better off out. The company, British Steel, is the second-largest steel manufacturer in Britain. It will go into administration unless it secures an emergency loan from the government. The company initially requested a support package of £75 million but has apparently reduced this to £30 million on the understanding that its main shareholder and lenders will provide additional funds. The emergency is a huge blow to workers at British Steel’s plants at Scunthorpe and Teesside.
