Coming from a company whose business model is based on exploiting the privacy of its users, one might be forgiven for greeting Pichai’s promises with some skepticism. Privacy is an issue big technology companies are talking about: Apple wears its privacy commitment on its sleeve and defines it as a fundamental right, making it the great competitive advantage of its services. Where do Apple, Google and Facebook really stand on the issue, and can we believe what they say? Zuckerberg can write all the op-ed pieces he likes, but Facebook has no understanding of the concept of privacy and cannot be trusted to manage its users’ data. One thing is all this new talk about privacy, quite another is having the credibility that comes from actions, not words.
