A great virtue of Taiwan’s voters is that they’re pragmatic, a useful trait for an island under threat of a Chinese invasion. That pragmatism was on display in local elections Saturday that rebuked President Tsai Ing-wen while refusing to ban nuclear power. Ms. Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party lost several high-profile mayoral posts and a slew of municipal council seats across the country. Ms. Tsai resigned as leader of the DPP and now faces an uphill battle to hold the presidency in early 2020.
