TAIPEI, Taiwan — A man who brutally murdered an 8-year-old girl in 2015 will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a top court rejected his appeal. Kung Chung-an's (龔重安) defense argued that he had committed the crime due to mental illness and that, given proper treatment, he could be rehabilitated. The Supreme Court wasn't persuaded, and said the cruel nature of the act warranted life imprisonment and the deprivation of his civil rights for life. Prosecutors had argued during his initial trial that his crime warranted a death sentence. He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison by Shihlin District Court on Feb. 26 last year.
