Left to their own devices by the Supreme Court, some states and counties appear to be testing how far they can go with voter suppression. Following the court’s decision in Shelby County, the Republican-led Legislature passed a law stuffed with voting restrictions, including voter ID requirements and reductions in early voting. The same is true of a move by the secretary of state in Georgia to clean up the voter rolls. The Supreme Court has the authority to resurrect protections like those in Section 5, perhaps for a new set of jurisdictions. The likelihood of either is in the hands of the voters — the ones who can cast their ballots.
