It’s taken 144 years but Canada’s Supreme Court has discovered that the nation’s borders extend well beyond Ottawa. The court hears cases from across the country and it makes decisions that affect Canadians from coast to coast to coast, so it’s high time the nine Supreme Court justices saw a bit of the country and, even more importantly, let Canadians see them. He has promised more accessibility and transparency and that’s why the nation’s top court held hearings outside Ottawa this week for the first time since it was established in 1875. “This is why I believe it is so important for people to see how the justice system works.”He’s right. Holding hearings outside of Ottawa, allowing people to watch court proceedings online and issuing plain language summaries of its rulings are important steps to ensuring that the court is connected to the people it serves.
