The Sreepur Zamindar house, immortalised by ‘Bou Thakuranir Haat’, in ruins

When Rabindranath created the character Surma of the novel ‘Bou Thakuranir Haat’, he envisioned a Zamindar house to keep her memories alive. Today the Sreepur Zamindar house is long forgotten. Jessore’s influential king Pratapaditya married off his son Udayaditya to Bibha Rani Pal, daughter of Sarada Ranjan Pal, a zamindar of Sreepur. Subsequently, Rabindranath Tagore wrote this story as the popular novel ‘Bou Thakuranir Haat’. The ruins of the Zamindar house situated in Sreepur Upazila, 15 km from Magura district town, still remain.
