Last week, the National Retail Federation put out a report saying organized retail crime accounted for nearly half of overall shrink. Since 2021, however, there has been a huge spike — at least 1,575 mentions of retail theft. One recent study offers some clarity: The hype about a national shoplifting crime wave is probably a bit overblown. The study has its limits: It only includes reported thefts, which are a subset of the actual number of retail thefts.
