The racially grotesque connotation of the word that developed under slavery is not the version I find acceptable to use. The Black communities to which I belong do not use the N-word to demean. We will hear shouts from atop Mount Sinai that academic freedom, freedom of speech and educational integrity are all at risk by putting students’ well-being first. Academic freedom has always meant colonial academic freedom. Black students do not ask for any erasure of history.
